ESG Group Update: Clean Air Project

At Surrey Research Park, our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals are more than just commitments, they are the foundation of actionable change. A key initiative from our ESG group is the Clean Air Project, launched in collaboration with the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE).

What is the Clean Air Project?

This innovative project focuses on monitoring air quality in and around the Park, leveraging the expertise of GCARE. It also examines the various modes of travel used by people commuting to the Park, aiming to identify and address key areas for improvement. By understanding these patterns, the project will provide actionable insights to promote sustainable transport choices and healthier air for everyone who works here.

Why This Matters

Air pollution remains a critical global challenge, and by taking proactive steps locally, we can contribute to broader efforts to tackle this issue. The Clean Air Project is just one part of the ESG Group’s dedication to creating a more sustainable and environmentally responsible community at Surrey Research Park.

Want to Get Involved?

The ESG Group welcomes contributions and collaboration. If you’d like to support this project, share ideas, or ask questions, feel free to reach out to Kat Mack, Head of Engagement, via k.mack@surrey.ac.uk.

Updated: Fresh Flavours and Innovative Experiences Coming to The Hub Café!

----------------------------------------- UPDATE - 10 /10/24 ------------------------------------

New Earlier Start Date for The Hub on the Park Café Revamp!

There’s exciting news from The Hub on the Park Café! The new management team from Campus Services Cateringis now starting a week earlier than planned, eager to refresh the space and enhance your experience.

To make this happen, the café’s kitchen will close from Monday 28th to Wednesday 30th October. During this time you’ll be able to buy street food and speciality coffee from a mobile catering team in front of the STC.

In the last edition of Park Life we said the team was looking forward to bringing their fresh, sustainable, and innovative experience to the Park from Friday 1st November.

Now, however, they’re eager to use the slightly longer handover period as a golden opportunity to enhance the interior and re-brand the space – offering a better visual experience for customers.

What does this mean for me?

To enable this to happen, the main kitchen will now need to close for three days from Monday 28h October to Wednesday 30th October, reopening on Thursday 31st October.

Will I still be able to get coffee, breakfast and lunch?

During this transition period, Campus Services Catering will partner with a top mobile catering company to ensure none of our Park community misses out on hot breakfast, lunch or, more importantly, their coffee fix!

So, for the few days of the transition, they’ll be doing something a bit different – serving street food-style food and (of course) speciality coffee from a mobile catering van in front of the STC. Indoor seating will still be available inside the café.

Extended Introductory Offer

As a token of appreciation throughout the transition, the team are extending their introductory offer of half-price coffee to cover two days - Thursday (31st) and Friday (1st Nov).

As well as being a great opportunity to experience the Chimney Fire brand coffee – the new team will serve a selection of food and drinks from a special one-off pre-launch menu.

The kitchen will begin ramping up fully from the following Monday (4th November).

Corporate Hospitality

Campus Services Catering will manage and deliver all corporate hospitality requests booked from Monday 28th October onwards. If you have any questions about your catering, please email srpcafe@surrey.ac.uk

Will you be offering catering services across business on the Research Park?

Thanks to Jemma Draper for positing this excellent question. Yes, Campus Services Catering is excited to share news that they are planning to extend their hospitality service to businesses on the Park from the New Year.

Please look out for more details on this in a future edition of Park Life.

A New Sustainable Offering

Sustainability will be a core priority for the new team.

With Campus Services Catering sourcing local ingredients from local suppliers, using more compostable and biodegradable packaging, and offering a greater vegan choice, while meticulously planning menus and food orders to minimise leftovers and waste.

And if you love coffee, then you’re in for a special treat!

For coffee connoisseurs we’re thrilled to see the Surrey-based, award-winning Chimney Fire Coffee become the supplier of choice for The Hub on the Park Café.

Not only will this mean you’ll be able to grab a premium quality, sustainably sourced coffee from Brazil and Peru, but when you purchase a coffee, you’ll also be supporting the company’s philanthropic projects in these countries, helping growers and their communities!
