Surrey Research Park host local year 10 students for a day of workplace experience

Around 40 local year 10 students visited Surrey Research Park in July to discover what it is like to work for a technology company in a STEM role.
Organised by SATRO as part of its Open Doors Programme, students from King’s College, Christ’s College and County School met representatives from ipTEST, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, Igenomix, NatureMetrics and BAE Systems.
The day included tours of the SSTL site and Igenomix lab, a visit to ipTEST with practical demonstrations of their design process and cutting-edge testing machines, and opportunities to hear about a range of career options and pathways into employment from across all the participating companies.
Student and teacher feedback was fantastic. Students reported an increased understanding of the skills employers are looking for and greater confidence to make decisions about their future.
Comments included, “there are many more job opportunities than you think there are”, “I learnt lots about available STEM careers paths and how to get there” and “there are lots of really important small businesses that contribute to manufacturing of big brands”.
Teachers said that it was a “brilliant day introducing and inspiring students to look into possibilities they wouldn’t usually have” and “students have come away discussing their futures and careers, which is great”.
SATRO’s mission is to raise the aspirations of young people and equip them with the employability skills they need for a successful career.
SATRO CEO Andrew Whitby-Collins said “SATRO’s Open Doors Programme partners with local companies to help broaden students’ understanding of the career opportunities open to them in the STEM sector, which is key to the local economy. We really value partnering with companies on the Park, as they provide valuable experiences for local young people that have real and immediate impact”.
