Can you support a SATRO STEAM Research Work Placement?

Can you help inspire Year 12 (aged 16-17) students by supporting them to investigate a short research topic this summer?
If so, then SATRO would love you to get involved with their Research Work Placement (RWP) programme and support students in the local area to learn about the world of work and gain valuable skills.
SATRO has run this programme for many years and is eager to build on last year’s success which saw 70 students benefitting from placements.
The programme is fully supported by SATRO and is mainly virtual with one site visit during the summer months and a final celebration at STC in the Autumn.
How you can make a difference to young people’s lives
Jessica Richardson, Research Work Placement Coordinator at SATRO said:
"Feedback shows that meaningful engagement with the future workforce provides valuable insights that challenge perceptions and help with your future recruitment, and 100% of participating students say they use this experience in their personal statement or CV.
“For businesses, taking part can be a fun way to develop teamwork, hone skills within your staff or give you the opportunity to enhance a young person’s life. But primarily it is a wonderful way to interact within the community and encourage the younger generation to expand their knowledge and get a glimpse of the world of work."
How it works
Participating businesses liaise with SATRO to develop and set placement students a research project theme.
SATRO asks students to commit to a two-week period over the summer between the beginning of July and mid-August to complete the project. However, based on previous years, businesses typically meet with their placement student three to four times and for no longer than an hour each time.
How your business can help
- Provide research titles for the students.
- Guide, advise and help a student during the summer while they work on your title, as a minimum we would ask you to attend a welcome meeting, arrange at least two interim sessions with the student, mark their work and attend the final presentation event.
- Help judge the entries using a points scheme.
Benefits to You
SATRO says that that partners enjoy working with the young people and helping them expand their knowledge of a particular area, improve their skills and have a great start in taking the first steps to university or the world of work.
